You can download Hokusai for free and use basic features, like mono/stereo recording, or cut, copy and paste, for as long as you like. If you upgrade to Hokusai 3 Pro, you can take full advantage of Hokusai’s many features.

In & Out

  • Record with built-in mic, line in, USB or Lightning. Up to 8 channels at a time with a suitable audio device.

  • Optionally monitor your recordings via headphones, with adjustable stereo spread.

  • Recording input gain control (if supported by audio device).

  • Select whether two-channel recordings are treated as one stereo track, or two mono tracks.

  • Import from Wave .wav, Core Audio .caf, .aiff, .mp3, .m4a and .aac files, amongst others.

  • Export to uncompressed Wave .wav, or compressed .mp3 or AAC .m4a files, with control over sample rate, mono/stereo, and bit rate/bit depth.

  • Export multi-track projects mixed together, or as individual track audio files (“stems”). Or export one project into multiple audio files by splitting wherever you placed a marker on the timeline.

  • Record, edit and export projects at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz sample rates.

  • Store projects in iCloud Drive for automatic sync (or store on your device only, if you prefer).

  • Use the Finder (macOS), Files app (iOS) or drag-and-drop to import audio into Hokusai or export out to other apps.

  • (iOS) Transfer audio to, and share from your device via USB, iCloud, or other services.

  • (iOS) Import tracks from your Music library.1

  • (iOS) High-quality Bluetooth recording (requires supported hardware and in a supported region).

Mix & Merge

  • Select, cut, copy, paste, delete, and trim audio.

  • Drag selected audio earlier or later in the timeline, or to different tracks.

  • Convert tracks between mono & stereo.

  • Split and merge stereo tracks — edit left and right channels separately.

  • Set volume, panning, solo or mute for each track.

  • Level meters (with peaks) for each track and the final mix.

  • Mix multiple tracks down to one.

  • Reorder tracks within a project.

  • Select and edit across multiple tracks at once.

  • Snap selections to zero crossings.

  • Expand/shrink selections around sound or silence.

Tools & Customisation

  • Pick from different colour schemes and colour-code your tracks.

  • Classic, narrow or floating track sidebar (or hide it completely).

  • Mark locations in your projects, and add colours or notes to them, for fast navigation or selection. Pin them to a specific time regardless of editing, or have them move with a piece of audio as you edit.

  • Time-based (hours/minutes/seconds) or tempo-based (beats/bars) timeline.

  • Auto Detect Tempo (iOS/iPad OS/macOS 27 or later).

  • Show loudness as either percentage or decibels.

  • Optionally leave the Inspector open for even faster access to tools and effects.

  • Extensive keyboard shortcuts (with searchable list).

  • Detailed, searchable User Guide with pop-up glossary.

  • Continue applying effects, conversions, export, etc while the app is in the background (where supported by your device).

  • Project Browser (iOS) and Welcome Window (macOS) show previews of your project’s waveforms.

  • (macOS) Customisable toolbar.

  • (iOS) Deleted projects are kept for up to 30 days.

Many effects support live preview: instantly hear changes in settings. Save your favourite settings to reuse later. Presets and favourites sync via iCloud Drive for access on all your devices.

The effects list is now searchable and can show a carousel of recently-used effects for quick access. On macOS and iPad OS, effects are also available directly from the main menu.
